Your Essential Holiday Safety Checklist

Schools are nearly out, the “out of office” auto-replies are being set, and for thousands of South Africans, the call of the coast, mountains, or bush is getting louder. Whether you’re packing the family car for a trip to the sea, heading inland to visit relatives, or managing a fleet of drivers delivering final orders for the year, the festive season rush is officially here.

But before you load the boot and hit the N1 or N3, there’s one critical box to tick: Safety.

At Super Tyres, we know that a great holiday starts long before you leave your driveway. As Dean Horn, our Managing Director, puts it: “Transport is not just about getting from point A to point B. It connects families, supports businesses and keeps our economy moving. This is why road safety matters for every driver, every passenger and every community.”

To help you get to your destination safely—and without the headache of a roadside breakdown—we’ve put together a few essential pre-trip checks.

 It Starts with the Rubber

Your tyres are the only things connecting your vehicle to the tarmac. That’s a lot of responsibility for four patches of rubber. We always say, “Before the holiday rush, give your tyres the attention they deserve.”

Here is your quick tyre inspection from your holiday safety checklist:

  • The Physical Inspection: Walk around the car. Are there cuts, bulges, or uneven wear on the sidewalls?
  • Tread Depth: Is there enough grip? If they look smooth, they aren’t safe—especially for summer storms.
  • Pressure is Key: Under-inflated or over-inflated tyres affect how your car handles and brakes. They also guzzle more fuel. Check your manual for the right specs (remember to adjust for a fully loaded car).
  • The Forgotten Hero: Don’t forget the spare wheel. There is nothing worse than getting a flat and realising your spare is flat too.
  • The 5-Year Rule: Rubber ages. Tyres older than five years can become brittle and lose grip, even if the tread looks fine. If you aren’t sure how to check the date code, pop into Super Tyres and we’ll check for you.

Smooth Sailing (Shocks and Wipers)

If your car feels like a bouncy castle, vibrates excessively, or pulls to one side, your shocks or alignment might be out. Good shocks aren’t just for comfort; they are vital for stopping distance and handling.

While you’re at it, check the fluids (oil, water, brake fluid), make sure all your lights are working, and test your wipers. You want a clear view when those sudden thunderstorms roll in.

The Driver Factor

Cars don’t crash themselves. Fatigue and impatience are major risks during the December chaos.

  • Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for the inevitable roadworks or roadblocks so you aren’t tempted to speed.
  • Rest: The golden rule is a break every two hours or 200 kilometres. Stretch your legs, hydrate, and swap drivers if you can.
  • Be Alert: Keep a three-second following distance (more at night or in rain).
  • Watch Out: Be mindful of pedestrians and animals, especially when driving through rural areas or at dawn and dusk.

Peace of Mind Before You Leave

Good preparation creates peace of mind. If you are uncertain about the condition of your tyres or shocks, get them checked by a professional before you start your journey. Doing this ahead of time rather than at the last minute can save you from unnecessary delays or roadside stress.

So, as you book that final accommodation and pack the cooler box, take a moment to ensure your vehicle is as ready for the break as you are.

From the whole team at Super Tyres: Travel safe, buckle up, and make some happy holiday memories!
