Back in 1916, flat tyres were frequent and service stations weren’t, so young mechanic and entrepreneur August F. Meyer saw an opportunity so great he couldn’t pass it up. It seemed logical to Meyer that, with all those flat tyres, there should be quite a market for tyre pumps. Thus the Brisk Blast manufacturing company was established and they soon began producing over 5000 tyre pumps a week but Meyer saw something bigger.
So did a local Dodge dealer named Charles S. McIntyre and in 1918, McIntyre became Meyers partner and the vice president of the company. In 1919, the company continued to grow and diversify and changed their name to The Monroe Auto Equipment Company, the spirit of innovation was already hard at work and that same year they had perfected the first self-oiled, single-barreled tyre pump and the sales climbed to over two million a year.
By the mid 1920’s, two important innovations changed the nature of Monroe as a whole. Service stations around the country started offering free air and later on they began manufacturing cars with spare tyres as standard equipment on all cars. With their first invention seeming obsolete they began applying the technology of the single-barreled tyre pump to a purpose no one had envisioned yet: a smoother ride for drivers. In 1926, Monroe introduced the first shock eliminator which soon replaced the unmanageable carriage springs on many passenger vehicles.
Over the decades, one Monroe innovation followed another like the first double action shocks in 1929 and the first railroad shock absorber in 1938. In 1964, they expanded their production internationally and Monroe opened its first manufacturing plant in Belgium. In 1977, Monroe became a part of Tenneco Inc. whose diversified and multinational resources allowed for new opportunities on a global scale.
