In the late 19th century, tyres were made of solid rubber and had to be replaced frequently due to their low quality. Back in 1889, two brothers founded the Michelin Tyre Company in Paris, France, with a vision to revolutionize the industry. In 1891, The Michelin company took out its first patent for a removable pneumatic tyre which was used by Charles Terront to win the world’s first long-distance cycle race, the 1891 Paris-Brest-Paris.

Thus, the Michelin man was born in 1898. In 1951, Michelin was reorganized as a holding company and in 1960 was taken over by Édouard’s grandson. Over the next 30 years he led Michelin to the number one position in the World Tyre Market.
