Company Overview & History

With a long and distinguished history of innovation and excellence, Dunlop is one of the leading tyre manufacturers in the world. A brand synonymous with quality, they have consistently set the bar high when it comes to performance, safety and durability. They are committed to innovating and improving their products to ensure the best quality and performance for their tyres. Whether you’re on the track, the road, or off the beaten path, Dunlop has a tyre for every driver.

Dunlop Tyres has a long and illustrious history dating back 135 years. In 1888, Scotsman John Boyd Dunlop invented the first pneumatic tyre and a year later he established the Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company in Dublin, Ireland. The company grew in popularity and soon enough their tyres were being used in motor racing, bicycle racing and motorcycles. Later in 1896, they accomplished their first motor racing win when Henri Fournier won the Paris-Marseille-Paris race on Dunlop Tyres. By the turn of the century, they had become one of the world’s leading tyre manufacturers and their tyres became a standard in the automotive industry. In 1909, Dunlop introduced its first range of radial tyres which were more efficient and provided improved handling and safety compared to pneumatic tyres.

In 1920 they opened their first factory outside of Ireland, in England, and shortly after the Second World War (1945) they opened another factory in North America, which expanded their reach in the automotive industry significantly. The 1950s saw the introduction of the first Run-Flat tyre and the first tubeless tyres, which gave tyres a longer lifespan compared to tyres from previous years. In 1977, Dunlop acquired the United States rubber company, Uniroyal-Goodrich, and in 1988 the company was acquired by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. In the years since Dunlop Tyres has continued to grow into one of the most prominent tyre producers used by some of the most prestigious car and motorcycle manufacturers in the world.
