In today’s fast-paced corporate world, where job-hopping is often the norm and tenures are measured in months rather than years, finding a story of true dedication is a rarity. It is a testament to both the individual’s character and the company’s culture when a partnership spans decades. This month, Super Tyres is immensely proud to shine a spotlight on a remarkable milestone that embodies loyalty, resilience, and unwavering excellence.
When Florence Pillay first walked through the doors of Super Tyres in November 1995, the world was a very different place. She never imagined that she would still be proudly serving the company three decades later. Today, the 54-year-old Bookkeeper at our Head Office in Durban celebrates an incredible 30 years of dedication, growth, and purpose; a journey that has been as much about personal fulfilment as it has been about professional achievement.
Florence Pillay: From “Girl Friday” to Financial Guardian
Florence’s story is one of humble beginnings and meteoric ambition. Her career at Super Tyres began under the mentorship of the company’s visionary founders, Robert James (Bob) and Jocelyn Horn. Hired initially as a “Girl Friday”—a role requiring versatility and quick thinking—she was tasked with assisting in banking, payroll, and bookkeeping for their property companies.
It did not take long for her potential to be recognised. Within mere months, Florence’s sharp attention to detail and exceptional work ethic earned her a significant promotion. She was entrusted with managing the cash banking for all 12 retail stores, a responsibility demanding absolute precision. Just nine months later, she rose to the position of Bookkeeper, overseeing payroll, human resources, and bookkeeping for the entire Super Tyres Group and its subsidiaries.

Navigating Change and Complexity
Three decades in business brings inevitable change, and Florence Pillay has been a constant anchor through it all. She has adapted seamlessly to new management teams and embraced the vital digital transformation of accounting systems, moving from traditional methods to sophisticated software with ease.
One of the most significant tests of her capacity came recently in 2024, when Super Tyres underwent a major restructuring. The group organised into 17 distinct entities, each operating as its own independent company. Today, Florence continues to oversee the bookkeeping for all of them, including the group’s property ventures, ensuring financial accuracy and accountability at every single level.
Reflecting on her tenure, Florence Pillay expresses deep appreciation for the leadership that has guided her path. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and for the trust placed in me by our visionary leaders, Mr. Dean Horn, Mrs. Tracey Desaunois, Mrs. Leslie Vivian Purvis-Bush and our Senior Management teams,” says Florence. “It’s been a journey of growth, resilience and faith, and I am proud to have played a part in the success of an organisation that is like family.”
A Legacy of Recognition
Florence’s excellence and consistency have not gone unnoticed by the Super Tyres family. In 2019, she was named Administrator of the Year, a coveted award bestowed only once to an employee, highlighting the singular nature of her contribution. Furthermore, she has received several awards for perfect attendance—a rarity in any industry—including a Raving Fan certificate in 2025. These accolades are a true reflection of her unwavering dedication to her team and her craft.
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Florence points to the very things that might daunt others: the challenge.
“The ability to test my capacity and rise above it gives me great satisfaction. I enjoy the variety and the opportunities to learn something new every day,” she explains. “This year has reminded me of the importance of resilience, dedication, patience and tolerance, the fundamental cornerstones for moving forward, together.”
Life Beyond the Ledger
Florence’s heart for service extends well beyond the office walls. A resident of Montford, Chatsworth, she shares her life with Manuel, her husband of 33 years, whom she describes as her “soulmate and partner in ministry.” Together, they are actively involved in leadership at their local church, serving their community with the same passion Florence brings to her work.
The couple’s pride and joy is their daughter, Dr. E. Angel Pillay, a Veterinarian. It is clear that the values of hard work and education run deep in the Pillay household.
Looking to the Future
Even after 30 years, Florence is not one to rest on her laurels. As she looks toward the future, she hopes to step into a senior management role within finance, administration, or payroll. Her vision is one of servant leadership.
“I am passionate about mentoring and supporting others in their professional journeys, and guiding and leading them to their individual path to God,” she says. “My goal has always been to be a blessing to my family and to others. By sharing knowledge and encouraging my colleagues, I believe we can create a workplace where everyone thrives.”
The Keys to Success
Florence’s advice for longevity and success is simple yet profound, rooted in the values that have sustained her for thirty years.
“Love, trust, hope, and faith. Those are the foundations,” she asserts. “I believe in continuous learning, in turning challenges into opportunities, and in doing everything with a heart of gratitude.”
For Florence, true happiness is found in integrity. “Put God first, take pride in who you are and what you do, and always be reliable, honest and loyal despite the odds. We are all on a journey to make an impact and leave a legacy. Enjoy the process and the progress, and always be the gem you are.”
After 30 years of service, Florence’s legacy at Super Tyres is one of devotion, diligence, and grace. She serves as an inspiring reminder to us all that lasting success is built not just through hard work, but through heart.
Congratulations, Florence, on your 30-year journey! Here is to many more years of success together.
